What the eight checks look at
Each check returns pass, warning or fail. A fail on the TLD, slang, native-language, shape or trademark check means we advise against the name.
- TLD
- Whether the ending is one international buyers expect. .com is the standard; some endings are a second choice and others hurt trust or reach.
- Slang
- Whether the name contains, or can be read as, vulgar or negative English slang — including readings that appear when the letters are split differently.
- Pronunciation
- Whether a native speaker can say it in one go: long runs of consonants, a q without a u, rare letters and very low vowel share all make names stumble.
- Native-language traces
- Whether the name looks like another language written in Latin letters instead of an English name or a deliberate coinage.
- Topic
- Whether a recognisable topic word is in the name, which helps people connect it to what you do.
- Shape
- Hyphens, digits and length. Names up to 12 characters count as a suitable length; the longer a name gets, the harder it is to remember and say.
- Coinage
- For names that are not dictionary words: is it a pronounceable invented word, or an arbitrary string of letters?
- Known brands
- Whether the name matches a list of well-known brands or sites, alone or with a generic word attached. This is a list comparison, not a trademark search.
